Captain
Matt Whitney
As a young boy I was lucky enough to go to work with my dad
on the boat meeting people and enjoying Lake Michigan. Learning
both the business and the fishing with my dad for the last
30 years, I’m committed to doing everything I can to
ensure your trip is a memorable one. I am fortunate enough
to have been able to purchase the business from my dad and
with continued support from my parents and the help and support
of my own family, we look forward to serving you for the next
30 years.
Captain
Ken Whitney
Capt. Ken was hooked on chasing salmon on Lake Michigan
back in the late 60’s and has been pursuing these
powerful fish ever since. The Captain (my dad) has been
introducing others to this thrill now for over 30 years
and was one of less than a hand full of Captains running
a full time charter service out of the port of Grand Haven
back in the mid 70’s. One of the reasons I believe
we’ve enjoyed so much success over the years is my
dad’s philosophy on the business of charter fishing,
it is simply that “We are in the entertainment business
we’re not a fish market.” For 30 years now we,
as a family run business, have worked very hard to ensure
our customers enjoy their day with us on the water as much
as we enjoy being out there with them. With well over 20’000
hours of fishing time logged on Lake Michigan out of Grand
Haven, he’s learned a thing or two about catching
fish as well. Captain Ken is a past president of the Michigan
Charter Boat Association, a past president of the local
chapter of the organization and a retired Michigan State
Police Officer. Captain Ken also is the father of a bunch
of us kids, no wonder he enjoys fishing so much.
First Mate Teresa Whitney
You guessed it, that’s my mom. For the first 25 years
mom’s main focus was to make sure all of the details,
answering phones, doing the books, shopping for food for
customers etc were taken care of, today all of those details
have been handed over to my wife Barb and now mom goes fishing.
As putting up with (oops - I meant enjoying every minute
working with) Captain Ken is an experience to be shared,
she works part time with dad keeping him on top of the schools
of fish and enjoying the more fun side of the business.
Teresa not only manages to keep the boat on course, she
also has managed to keep our family on course as well. As
an added bonus, the occasional time when mom needs to remind
the Captain who the boss really is can in itself be worth
the price of admission.
First Mate Alex Whitney
Since the ripe old age of three, Alex has been my fishing
partner and has been running charters on a regular basis
for the last 5 years. In addition, Alex was riding on trips
learning the ropes for a couple more. With the exception
of school days and a couple of days he takes off to fish
tournaments with friends, you’ll find Alex on the
boat eager to help you enjoy your day on the water with
us. For a young man of 16, he already has a respectable
track record in tournaments with two firsts and one second
place finish in 5 years and is willing to share all of his
fish catching knowledge to help you land your fish. Alex
has had a fishing pole in his hands since he was three and
while he may look a little goofy, he knows the sport well.
